Angel Flight’s New Look!

Angel Flight South Central, one of our favorite aviation-related charities, recently launched its fun new website. Angel Flight South Central’s mission is to organize free air transportation to those needing humanitarian and medical-related flights. Angel Flight’s bread and butter is arranging travel for folks requiring specialized medical treatment not available to them locally. The hard-working staff at Angel Flight coordinates a network of volunteer pilots who provide flights at no cost to Angel Flight or the passengers. Sound good? You can donate to Angel Flight here!

Of course, I might be a little biased about the new website, as Angel Flight’s using a photo (above) from one of my favorite flights for them! In January 2020, I flew this charming family from Gulf Shores, Alabama to Houston a couple of times. Having three generations aboard was a special treat.

The flight was a scenic one. The route (below) from Jack Edwards National Airport (JKA) in Gulf Shores to Houston skirts the coast, goes right over the top of New Orleans, then south of Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles and Beaumont. The descent into Houston is across Galveston Bay.

We had amazing weather on both flights, nary a bump along the way. Shortly after we reached cruise altitude on the second flight, I’d turned off the seat belt sign. That is, I’d said they could swap seats if they wanted—I don’t actually have a seat belt sign, and “feel free to move about the cabin” is a tad misleading when you’re talking about the back of a six-seat Bonanza!

But apparently the size of the cabin wasn’t much of a problem. When a flight’s super smooth, up front you can feel the passengers move around behind you. When I felt a slight disturbance in the force, I turned around to see the little princess doing a full-on handstand in the middle of the cabin! That was a first for me! She had a lot of fun. We all did.

One of the best parts about flying for Angel Flight is meeting the wonderful passengers, getting to know them, and hearing their stories. It was a delight to spend time with these folks, and I look forward to flying with them again.
